We have multiple tasks before us.  The first is to do trials of the material in an animal model of diabetes.  The main thing we want to see is if the material can release insulin into the animal using the light source in a manner similar to what we see in the “test tube”.  We want to see insulin released in response to light pulses.  We also want to see how much insulin can be contained and ultimately released from one injection of the material.  The second thing we need to do is make the base polymer biodegradable, so that once all of the insulin is released from the polymer, the polymer can be absorbed by the body.  An additional thing we are interested in doing is increasing the density of insulin on these materials, to allow potentially multiple weeks of insulin to be available (and thus eliminate weeks of injections).
